Meschiya Lake is a big part of the resurgence of traditional jazz and swing music currently taking place in New Orleans. Her storied past and extensive travels give her a vastly different approach than that of music school graduate. She and her stellar band, the Little Big Horns, have started to cross borders with their music. Brass-A-Holics is one of the hottest new groups in New Orleans, having sprung up from Soul Rebels Brass band alumni, Winston Turner and Tannon Wilson. Their energetic blend of New Orleans brass and D.C. gogo funk makes for a high energy show that keeps the feet moving. With a debut album on the horizon, this group is solidifying themselves as a New Orleans mainstay.
King James and the Special Men are one of the best kept secrets in New Orleans. Named after a popular furniture commercial in the eighties, they have held down a regular Monday night gig in for years at BJ’s in the Bywater. They play 9th ward Rhythm and Blues, taking the sounds of yesteryear and putting a more updated finish on a familiar sound. Not typically the type to cross Canal St., we got them behind the mule in Mid City after a performance at Voodoo Festival.

We are having a party to screen a dozen BSS videos this weekend in New Orleans. It is free and open to the public so we hope you can make it. At the event, we will also put out a release schedule to the public for the next twelve videos. There will be free Bloody Marys and live music performances by King James and Colin Lake as well.

Last time the Magnetic Zeros came to New Orleans they decided to get behind the mule. We picked them up in the parking lot of the Mahalia Jackson Theatre right before their soundcheck and took them just across Rampart St. to the French Quarter. This shoot was quite the undertaking being that the band has twelve members (the carriage only seats nine) and we did not have our go-to-mule or driver with us that day. Needless to say, the resulting performance was truly magical and we are very excited to share this one with you guys. He’s a “Man On Fire” rolling through the city streets on the back of a mule-carriage. This band is a force to be reckoned with.
